Commitment
Clayton/Union County is ready to diversify its economic base. The Clayton-Union County Chamber of Commerce and the Union County Community Development Corporation are responsible for attracting business and industry to Clayton and Union County. These two entities serve as a resource for economic development information, data and issues, and to provide current information to the public.
These two entities have the resources and expertise to assist prospective new companies in all aspects of the site selection and relocation process.

Climate
Located on the high plains, Clayton enjoys a relatively moderate climate (see the chart below) with an annual average snowfall of 22.8 inches and average total precipitation of 15.44 inches.

The average elevation of Union County is 5,050 feet.
Education
The Clayton School District is an excellent one, with 541 students enrolled in four schools and a budget in 2009-2010 of just over $5 million. The student-teacher ratio is 13.8 and about 45% of its graduates go on to a post-secondary institution. Nearly 80% of Clayton’s residents (25 years and older) are a high school graduate or have attained a higher degree. Distance learning is offered from Mesa Technical College and Clovis Community College, as well as on-line courses. Most of our college bound students graduate with 30-40 hours of college credit completed via concurrent classes offered in the high school.

Location
Union County is located in the northeastern corner of New Mexico, bordering Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas. Clayton is located at the intersection of US Highways 56, 412, 64 and 87. Interstate 25 is the closest interstate highway, 83 miles to the west. Interstate 40 is accessible 109 miles to the south. The closest metropolitan city is Amarillo, Texas – 131 miles away.

Union County General Hospital is a full-service, acute care hospital that is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. It is operated by Clayton Health Systems, Inc., a 501(c)3, not-for-profit organization. Union County provides funds for equipment and physical plant needs through a Mill Levy Fund. The hospital has been in existence since 1962 and enjoys a positive financial performance.
The hospital's Medical Staff is comprised of Board Certified medical and surgical physicians. The physicians live in Clayton and are committed to providing full-time medical services for the community. The hospital accepts Medicare, Medicaid (New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma) and most commercial insurances. It offers 24 hour emergency room services and is the only provider in the area that offers a Medicare certified home health agency.

Resources – Land, Water and Carbon Dioxide:
The Town of Clayton recently purchased 1,760 acres of land on U.S. Highway 87 and adjacent to Clayton Municipal Airport. This land has twelve wells capable of producing a minimum of 3.5 million gallons of water per day. This is enough water to support approximately 14,000 additional people in the area – Water is plentiful! Land is plentiful!
Union County is located over the "Bravo Dome," considered to be the largest deposit of carbon dioxide in the United States. It is estimated to contain over 16 trillion cubic feet of carbon dioxide reserves.
