But my family still resides there so I still come to visit. (I should visit more often than I do but I don't.) I am glad to see you all on the net. Good job in defining Clayton. Clayton will always be home to us. (P.S. was browsing Big Country Realty to check on houses so that when we do decide to come home we will know what is there.) **wink**

Too many great encounters and sites to mention all, but if you ever want to go to a place that's both proud and friendly, Clayton is the place. I have already begun to recommend it to everyone I talk to as a great place to visit, but even a betterr place to live. Thanks for the hospitality---JOE

Greetings Clayton! My friend and I recently had the opportunity to visit your lovely town, thanks to our alternator going out last Sunday afternoon (February 13, 2005). We were returning from a visit in Colorado Springs, heading back to Arkansas, when our car just "died" at the traffic light in town. We managed to limp to the Dairy Queen, where several townspeople offered their assistance. Someone got in touch with a mechanic, who came out on a Sunday afternoon to take a look at the car, then led us to his shop and pointed us to the Best Western Motel across the street. That evening, we walked to the Eklund, where the hostess gave us a tour of the beautiful saloon and dining room, and filled us in on the colorful history of Clayton. We were informed the next morning that it would be another day before the mechanic could get a new alternator, but we decided to make the best of our situation and do some sight-seeing. Our search for a rental car was unsuccessful, so we called the U-Haul place in town and rented their smallest truck. We spent the rest of the day touring Clayton both on foot and in our truck--we visited the museum (which is closed on Monday's, but which graciously opened their doors to us anyway), and we drove out to view the dinosaur tracks at the State Park. That evening we had a scrumptious Valentine dinner at the Eklund. Fortunately, our car was ready by the next morning and we made it safe and sound back to Arkansas. Thank you, Clayton, for your hospitality and generosity, and for making our trip one that we'll always remember! You certainly have a little piece of heaven in New Mexico! Special thanks to Mike, Mr. Blakely, Eloy and his wife, the Sunday evening hostess at the Eklund, the gracious ladies of the Clayton Visitor's Center, and to the patrons of the Dairy Queen who came to our aid Sunday! Priscilla and Ondra

Really beautiful country, hope to visit again one of these days to see how things have changed.

Clayton was the hometown for three generations of the Milligan Family. Dr. Thomas Fletcher, a country doctor, Thomas Fletcher Milligan lived there with his son, Dr. Charles Fletcher Milligan, also a medical doctor in town(1920-1935). My mother was born in Clayton, Margaret Ruth Milligan, and my aunt Ione Milligan Cornwall resided most of her life there. Her husband, Douglas Cornwall was mayor of Clayton, and I recall visiting them there on Locust Street. Growing up, Clayton, New Mexico was legendary. In 1995, I took my family to Clayton, went the cemetery to see the burial place of my grandparents and to see their home around the corner from the Cornwall's. My mother passed away recently and we had an opportunity to remember the good old days. My son is named Clayton, for Clayton, New Mexico. Our roots run deep in Union County.

I have travelled through Clayton several times on my trips from Southwest Louisiana to Denver where my son is a student. Two nights ago, I locked my keys in my van at the Love's in Clayton and two gentlemen assisted me, one running two blocks home to get a clothes hanger. I was reminded of how people once helped each other, even if they did not know them before the world became so rushed and crazy. It's nice to see that this kind of attitude still exists.

Enjoyed looking at your sight. I grew up in Dalhart but my grandparents lived on a ranch near Bueyeros...they did all their shopping and banking in Clayton. I'm looking for old issues of the Union County Leader in hopes of finding a copy of my grandfather's obituary. I still have dear friends in the community. I loved the sight. Melinda Clements

I have heard how beautiful your area is, but have never had the opportunity to visit. I'm sure that springtime is exceptional. I enjoyed the excellent photographs and your History section. Your museum would definitely be my first stop. Best wishes for the continued good fortune of your community. I look forward to visiting. Sincerely, Chip Hammer

My mother was raised in Union Co. and many relatives and friends are there. The photos make me homesick!

i used to live in clayton back in the day. My grandad (Bill) owns a pretty cool ranch on the way to the lake, and it seems like my pops is sort of a legend in clayton.

Doesn't the Eklund have their own web page? I cannot find the link. It is nearly impossible to find links on the business page. It takes too much time to move the cursor over every name. Web pages are supposed to make the internet more efficient. Rob Cadorine

Lived in Clayton years ago and ready to come back. Grandparens are burried in city cematety. Attend first thru seventh grades, was one of the first to attend classes in the jr high when it was built. Time to get back to my roots. Parents both grew-up in Clayton. The pictures bring back a lot of great memories. And I have a few of the old pictures myself.
